Analysis of Sample Papers

Analyze the sample papers in small groups: 
  1. Read grading rubrics.
  2. If necessary, go through the papers quickly.
  3. Rank the papers and grade them.
  4. Make a list of three weaknesses and three strengths of each of the papers based on your analysis of all the samples.
  5. Post your ranking, grade for each paper, and the list of strengths and weaknesses as a comment to this post.

    Strengths:
    1) Good citations.
    2) Adherence to format.
    3) Lists writing conventions plainly.
    Weaknesses:
    1) Run-on sentences/not concise.
    2) Nonlinear thought process.
    3) Clunky transitions.

    1) Helpful info for future psychologists.
    2) A good list of grammatical conventions.
    3) A quick read.

    1) Purposeless quotes.
    2) Does not follow format correctly.
    3) Not nearly long or informative enough.

    Writing as a Creative Writer:
    Strengths:
    1) In depth analysis.
    2) Good use of quotes.
    3) Good word choice/Lack of repetition.
    Weaknesses:
    1) Too wordy.
    2) Purpose of paper is not completely clear.
    3) Often used quotes in place of analysis, making it more of a synopsis with research than an evaluative report.

    Writing in the Field of Economics:
    Strengths:
    1) Incredibly informative about subject matter.
    2) Abundant source referencing.
    3) Describes findings in an easily understood manner.
    Weaknesses:
    1) Too much analysis of everything about the topic makes it hard to tell which characteristics the author thinks are important.
    2) Way longer than it needed to be.
    3) The author explains to the reader step-by-step how they arrived at the conclusions they did, but this is unnecessary and places too much emphasis on the reasoning and not enough on the results.

    The Role of Writing in Engineering:
    Strengths:
    1) Provides examples via quotes, cementing their points.
    2) Comprehensive and concise.
    3) Good grammar, transitions, and formatting goes a long way in showing how proficient the author is as a writer already.
    Weaknesses:
    1) Academic and nonacademic writing are analyzed at the same time , making it hard to tell the differences between the two.
    2) Too much of a focus on what the writer feels is necessary for them to succeed in writing as an engineer, instead of about what conventions already exist. (Focus on future instead of the present)
    3) The conclusion addresses how to become good writer instead of clarifying and drawing together the points made in previous sections.

    Strengths:
    1) Well organized.
    2) Simply written, easily read.
    3) Explains points very intuitively.
    Weaknesses:
    1) Too passively explains findings and doesn't think to compare them to other genres.
    2) Typically makes only one point out of every quote.
    3) Inconsistent grammar and quotation conventions.

    Sample Paper 1

    Strengths:

    - The structure of the paper is very clear and concise

    -The writer of the paper understood the APA format and very minimum to no mistakes

    -The writer uses his sources effectively to back up his thesis

    Weaknesses:

    -His paragraphs tend to run on

    -His paragraphs could have more impactful information instead of rambling

    - In class we talked about tone and genre etc. The author could elaborate on that to make the paper more effective



    Paper 2

    Strengths:

    -The writer uses pretty effective sources

    -The writer interviewed valid people to help him with paper

    -The sources were cited correctly

    Weakness

    -Missing title page and header and footer

    -The quotes are cited incorrectly

    -The text is not correct looks very unprofessional



    Paper 3

    Strengths:

    -Writer clearly understands the APA format

    -The paragraphs are clear and to the point

    -The sources are very effective to the thesis

    Weakness

    -Could elaborate more on the quotes

    -Could talk more about tone or genre

    -The beginning was amazing but the paper seem to slowly decrease in effectiveness

    Writing in the Field of Economics
    Strengths:1. up to date sources
    2. examples from life experiences
    3. have in-text quotations
    weaknesses:1. too much "I" usages
    2. conclusion is too short to explain everything
    3. too long

    The Role of Writing in Engineering
    Strengths:1. good citations which points out the usage of each sources
    2. explained each sources clearly

    Weaknesses:1. all sources are from internet
    2. didn't point out which is academic and which is not
    3. not enough conclusion
