What is rhetoric?

Do some research and come up with a working definition of rhetoric. Apply that idea of rhetoric and analyze a rhetorical discourse/text/act. Post your definition here as a comment.

  2. We define Rhetoric as: The art of writing or speaking with the intent to persuade.

    Example:
    Any one of the speeches the numerous candidates running for the Democratic nomination have been giving or plan to give.

  5. Rhetoric is the technique of using language effectively and persuasively with the careful use of different writing principles.

  6. A good example that demonstrates the definition of Rhetoric is the speech by Frederick Douglass, called "What to the slave is the Fourth of July." Douglass speaks clearly and elegantly in the speech, asking the rhetorical question about whether the "great freedoms declared in the Declaration of Independence" are extended to [blacks].

  8. Rhetoric is a persuasive form of writing or speech, using literary devices, pathos/ethos/logos, through language use, with an underlying theme that you want your audience to act on or towards. We chose to analyze the Gettysburg Address which is a persuasive speech from Abe Lincoln in 1863 for people to rally together the people of America.
